Reclaimed water turned into "electronic blood"! China's first electronic-grade source water preparation project launched in Jiaxing

When reclaimed water meets the cutting-edge electronics industry, a "water technology revolution" is quietly unfolding in Jiaxing! On February 28, the scientific research project "Key Technologies for Preparing Electronic-grade Source Water from Reclaimed Water" was officially launched in Jiaxing Port Area. Jointly initiated by three powerful entities – Hangzhou Heda Energy, Beijing Huixinying Energy Conservation & Environmental Protection, and Zhejiang University Shaoxing Research Institute – this project directly addresses the pain point of the electronics industry's "reliance on tap water for ultrapure water". By replacing traditional water sources with reclaimed water, it helps solve the "water security" dilemma facing China's high-end chip and semiconductor industries.

Why focus on "electronic-grade water"? – A direct look at the "lifeline" of the industry

The electronics and semiconductor industries are "major water users" with extremely stringent water quality requirements:

· Ultrapure water standardsTotal Organic Carbon (TOC) < 1 μg/L, resistivity > 18.2 MΩ·cm (comparable to laboratory-grade purity).

· Water source dilemma Currently, reclaimed water is mostly used in low-end scenarios such as cooling and washing. Small-molecule organic substances (e.g., urea, trihalomethanes) are difficult to treat deeply, making it unable to meet the demand for electronic-grade water sources.

Project goals

· Develop a short-process integrated technology of "nanofiltration + reverse osmosis + adsorption membrane" to realize the transformation from reclaimed water to electronic-grade source water. It will replace the traditional lengthy water production process of "ultrafiltration + activated carbon adsorption + reverse osmosis + degassing membrane" multi-stage treatment, with the water production cost significantly lower than the price of tap water.

· Key indicators: urea ≤ 10 μg/L, TOC ≤ 0.5 mg/L. It complies with the group standard T/CSES122—2023 Reclaimed Water Utilization - Water Quality of Electronic-grade Water Source.

· Complete pilot-scale verification by the end of 2025, and build a replicable technical benchmark for "water supply by quality + reclaimed water reuse".

Highlight of the launching ceremony: "Five-dimensional collaboration" among government, industry, academia, research and application

Core lineup

·  Government side:Jiaxing Port Area Economic Development Department and Municipal Science and Technology Bureau provide full support.

· Enterprise side:Hangzhou Heda Energy (a leading regional energy supplier) and Beijing Huixinying (a leader in membrane technology) take the lead in implementation.

· Academic side:Zhejiang University Shaoxing Research Institute offers cutting-edge scientific research support.

Technical trump cards

· Hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane  : Independently developed by AQFILM, a subsidiary of Beijing Huixinying, it features anti-pollution and high flux performance. It replaces the traditional ultrafiltration pretreatment, directly treats the coarsely filtered raw water, shortens the process by 30%, and reduces energy consumption by 20%.

· Proprietary technologies for water conservation and consumption reductionHuixinying (Jiaxing) Environmental Protection, another subsidiary of Beijing Huixinying, boasts rich experience in water treatment engineering, along with full-process solutions and multiple proprietary technology packages for water conservation and consumption reduction.

· Targeted adsorption membrane :Precisely captures small-molecule pollutants such as urea, overcoming the "last nanometer" challenge in TOC removal, with adsorption efficiency increased to over 95%.

· Intelligent control platformIntegrates water quality monitoring and process optimization to ensure long-term stable operation of the system and reduce manual intervention.

Leaders' golden words

Liu Yao, Deputy Director of the Economic Development Department of Jiaxing Port Area, stated: "This project will promote the upgrading of the membrane industry cluster in our province. While 'quenching the thirst' of the electronics industry, it will foster a new growth pole for the green economy!"

Why choose Jiaxing? – The ambition behind Qiantang District's "water strategy"

Jiaxing is not only a water town in the Jiangnan region but also a pioneer city in the intensive utilization of water resources. It enjoys policy support from the Water Conservation Action Implementation Plan and is home to benchmark projects such as reclaimed water plants. As a core industrial zone of Hangzhou, Qiantang District is making every effort to build a "water supply by quality" system:

· Current pain points:Electronics and biomedicine enterprises rely on the high-quality water source from Qiandao Lake, which comes with high costs and strained resources.

·  Path to breakthrough :Using reclaimed water from Qige Sewage Treatment Plant as raw material, electronic-grade source water will be produced through the technology of this project, realizing the leap from "sewage water to industrial gold water".

· Strategic significance :Once the project succeeds, it is expected that a single plant (with a daily capacity of 5,000 tons) will save 1.8 million tons of tap water annually, injecting solid momentum into the green transformation of Qiantang District during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.

Future Blueprint: From Laboratory to a Hundred-Billion-Yuan Industry

Technical roadmap

· 2024:Complete the process optimization of hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes.

· September 2025 :Acceptance of the pilot test, and submission of 5 patents and 3 papers.

· End of 2025:Deliver the technology package and launch industrialization promotion.

Industrial prospects

· If the technology is promoted nationwide, it is expected to reduce tap water consumption in the electronics industry by 30%.

·  It will drive the upgrading of industrial chains for domestic membrane materials and water treatment equipment, and unlock a market worth tens of billions of yuan.

Conclusion

A drop of reclaimed water tells half the story of innovation. This "water technology breakthrough campaign" jointly waged by governments, enterprises, academia and research institutions is not only about the "lifeline security" of the electronics industry, but will also write a vivid footnote to China's "dual carbon" strategy. We look forward to 2025, when a new paradigm of "Water-Saving China" will emerge from this experimental field!
